KING + DUFFERIN COMMUNITY CENTER

INTENT

The wind is crisp within your lungs in the early mornings of autumn. The birds chirping and the soft lapping of the fountain water are the sounds that greet you as you enter the site of the new King and Dufferin community center. The radial stone walkway is alight with the oranges and reds of fallen leaves. The centers structure; a harmonized concoction of modern and traditional architecture with a rich interior of primarily wood and elements of  steel slowly unravels before you. The lobby is abuzz with the new gallery exhibition, the laughter of those gathered follows you to the second floor.  There you curl in the large couches of the reading room and bathe in the sunlight streaming through the dome. The view surrounding you draws your creativity. You feel the pull and attraction. How your community has changed, from cobwebs to silk lines.

The conceptual origin of my project is rooted in the gentrification and conflict within the residence of park dale especially the loss of identity infecting the area. Through a series processes I grew my concept  from the echoing ripples of water. A structure affected by the smallest drop, it is felt throughout a stream, through the rocks and pebbles within the bedrock and back to the surface. The rhythmic nature of this element as well as the metaphorical symbolism carries through to the shapes of the built structure. Additionally architectural precedents such as the new Calgary library and traditional English courtyard pushed me to explore the landscape and urban layout of this site. My intentions through this project is to create a social space for all members of the community with a variety of programs within the arts as well as to intersect the site, with the library, the cafe and the existing bank.

PROGRAMING

My intentions from a pragmatic and visual standpoint is , to respond to the gentrification and lengthy conflict within area of King and Dufferin. This concept will resonate through the structure, interior and exterior programs and the material selection.

Aspects of the library is  reminiscent of traditional designs inspired by cathedrals. This is evident in the exaggerated interior curvatures and high ceilings. However , these elements are contrasted with the warm hemlock wood, the bold steel detailing and a rich yet natural colour pallet. With regards to exterior materiality, the façade will primarily made up of glass and concrete and steel sheets. The spacing and layout of the interior elements and the exterior programs including the bridge, the water fountain and the semi enclosed seating create a variety of experiential factors within this singular area.

My pragmatic intentions is to create a social hub centered around art and music. The large spacious work rooms, gallery and auditorium allow for the creation, display or performance of these works for all members of this community.
